Where is Witten/Herdecke University actually located? Our university is located in the west of Germany, in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The region is called the Ruhr area because it is located along the river Ruhr. Witten is part of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region, one of the largest conurbations in Europe.
The region and city are known for their industrial past, particularly in mining and the steel industry. But that was once upon a time! The region has changed dramatically: Collieries, blast furnaces and slag heaps have now become impressive industrial monuments that offer a wide range of cultural attractions or are popular excursion destinations as varied local recreation areas with plenty of nature, and beautifully designed green spaces and parks.
The region has developed into an influential centre of science and education; there are more universities and colleges here than in any other region in Germany. And well-known companies in the service, finance and media sectors as well as in politics, administration and other areas offer suitable jobs after graduation.
