[tra:ce]-Colloquium with Christoph Gießing: Accelerating the sustainable transition

Evening shot of wind turbines

The roadmaps for decarbonising our economies have been in place for many years. There is a broad consensus on the most important levers in all sectors. These are:

  1. Energy savings
  2. electrification
  3. Generation of energy from renewable sources
  4. Use of low-carbon raw materials in the form of hydrogen and bioenergy
  5. Carbon capture and storage

Companies have turned to more sustainable practices in recent years, with many making net zero commitments in line with the Paris Agreement. However, following the realisation of quick wins, the focus is increasingly shifting: reported greenhouse gas emissions are now being reduced through the use of renewable energy certificates and carbon offsets.

While these paper instruments play an important role, efforts must not stop. Against this background, the following questions arise: Why is the transition in the real world across our five main levers progressing so slowly? What needs to happen to scale the underlying technologies?

Christoph Gießing, Head of Sustainability, Siemens Bank and UW/H graduate, will talk about this. The event will be held in English.
