Nutrition and health programme: Planetary approach to health in the face of global climate change

Project overview

Teaching nutrition can be a very controversial topic as it gives rise to conflicting and diverse discussions and opinions. At the same time, it is a topic that is rarely integrated as an active part of the curriculum. However, nutrition and health concern us all and the challenge is to integrate this topic into everyday school life in a cross-curricular way, through practical actions that go beyond the boundaries of the educational environment and reach our daily habits.

The Food and Health Programme supports children's food and health sovereignty by promoting quality education, access to quality and diverse food, environmental awareness and the revitalisation of local knowledge. It incorporates a transdisciplinary perspective that integrates science, nutrition and art through nature-based and embodied activities within the framework of the Planetary Approach to Health and Education for Sustainable Development. It is not only focused on intellectual or thinking skills, but also considers the integration of self-connectedness, affective and socio-ecological perspectives to promote awareness of self, relationship with others and the environment.

The main aim of this research is to evaluate the impact of the nutrition and health programme on school children's behaviour and knowledge. Our fieldwork takes place at the Freie Waldorf school in Bonn, where we develop our programme for the whole school community. We also have links with schools in other countries: in South Africa (South Africa Forum NWR), in Namibia through the Pocket Garden Programme and in Argentina through "Jardines de bolsillo".

  • Improving the menu in the school kitchen in terms of nutritional quality and food diversity
  • Develop a curriculum that incorporates nutrition and health (salutogenesis) with a transdisciplinary approach that emphasises the connection with nature and environmental awareness, thereby promoting a sense of responsibility and sensitivity to life processes
  • Development of a curriculum for nutrition and health in teacher training programmes
  • Development of didactic materials to support learning processes (for teachers, children and families)
  • Promoting the willingness of the school community to work towards the common goal of "planetary health" through meaningful actions beyond the boundaries of the school
