Emergency sonography at PottPocus 2.0 at the UW/H - An ultrasound course that also gets on your nerves!
On 26 and 27 October 2024, Witten/Herdecke University was the meeting place for sonography enthusiasts from all over Germany. The two-day ultrasound course "Pott Pocus 2.0", organised by the Sonography Working Group (Sono-AG) of the Chair of General Practice and Outpatient Healthcare (iamag), attracted students and doctors from Hamburg, Leipzig, Berlin, Bochum, Münster and Munich to the Ruhr.
Under the direction of Tino Hofmann and Severin Pfeil, the course offered an intensive programme focusing on anaesthesiological nerve ultrasound diagnostics, ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, emergency sonography of the abdomen and heart (eFAST/FATE), and much more.
This event was made possible by the support of the anaesthetists from the Bergmannsheil Hospital in Bochum, who not only helped out with ultrasound equipment, but above all passed on their expertise to the participants in exciting lectures.
Special thanks go to Prof. Dr Peter Zahn, Head Physician of the Intensive Care and Anaesthesia Department, and Dominik Kuberra, Senior Physician in that department and DEGUM Level II Anaesthesiologist.
The 30 participants rotated in small groups at 8 stations, which were supervised by student tutors from the Sono-AG. They were able to familiarise themselves intensively with the various areas of application of sonography and put them into practice. One highlight was the innovative tofu models for practising ultrasound-guided intravenous access (USGIV), which were painstakingly designed by tutor Ida Niemann. These models realistically simulate the placement of central and peripheral venous accesses and enabled the participants to receive practical training.
The course was characterised by a special learning atmosphere: assistant and senior physicians at Bergmannsheil who were enthusiastic about ultrasound provided the students with help and advice and at the same time refreshed their own knowledge of abdominal and echocardiographic emergency sonography.
This resulted in a lively exchange on an equal footing and with mutual respect, which promoted mutual learning.
In addition to the professional input, the social aspect was not neglected: on Saturday evening, the first day of the course ended with drinks and pizza in a cosy atmosphere. Attendees were able to make new contacts across Germany.
The "Pott Pocus 2.0" was a complete success and is a highlight in the academic calendar of the iamag Sono-AG. We are already looking forward to the next one!
