Social media as a tool to promote informed decision-making on cervical cancer screening among migrant women

Project overview

Cervical cancer can be effectively prevented through early detection examinations. Women with a history of migration are less likely to take advantage of these preventive services than women without a history of migration. Younger women with a Turkish migration background in particular represent a vulnerable population group when it comes to cancer prevention. Barriers such as a lack of information, low health literacy and emotional reactions such as fear and shame make it difficult to make an informed decision in favour of or against screening.

A participatory social media campaign was developed to break down these barriers and promote diversity-sensitive decision-making. Together with an influencer, young women with a Turkish migration background, patients and experts, a diversity-sensitive concept is being developed in a multi-stage mixed-methods design and piloted on the Instagram platform. The project aims to increase the awareness and health literacy of young women with a Turkish migration background in order to enable them to make informed decisions about utilising cancer screening services.
