Paediatricians for Malawi

Project overview

The project is a response to the acute shortage of paediatricians in Malawi, which contributes significantly to the high infant mortality rate in the country. The cooperation with the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) provides funding for the training of seven Malawian paediatricians. At the same time, German trainee paediatricians are being offered the opportunity to complete a six-month period of further training in Malawi, which is recognised by the Medical Association. This should not only strengthen paediatric training in Malawi, but also provide German doctors with valuable practical experience in resource-poor environments.

Significance and model character

Paediatricians in Malawi play a central role in the training and further education of medical professionals as well as in the care of central and regional hospitals. The project pursues a structured and cooperative approach to the further training of prospective paediatricians from Malawi and Germany with the involvement of Witten/Herdecke University, the Westphalia-Lippe Medical Association and KUHeS. This model not only creates urgently needed training resources locally, but also promotes international medical cooperation and the development of sustainable healthcare solutions in a resource-poor country.
