Model development in the neurosciences
On the simplicity and generalisability of mechanistic explanations
Project overview
When is a scientific model not only complex, but also good? This question was at the centre of the research project "Model development in the neurosciences". Multi-level models are used in various disciplines as they are considered particularly convincing and explanatory; they allow better predictions and - in the best case - also more reliable therapies. The researchers have analysed when such models are really good and developed criteria that can be used to evaluate the complex models. They have also formulated guidelines for model development and selection that can be used in neuroscientific research.
