Mindfulness in acute inpatient care
An exploratory analysis of two randomised controlled trials
Project overview
Can mindfulness-based measures consisting of the 7Mind app with nursing-specific content, online workshops and a handbook for nurses influence the perceived stress and well-being of nurses in hospitals?
We investigated this question in two projects in cooperation with 7Mind GmbH and five affiliated hospitals from North Rhine-Westphalia: Mindfulness in acute inpatient care - a monocentric randomised controlled trial and Mindfulness in acute inpatient care - a multicentre randomised controlled trial.
The results of both studies were not consistent, although the study design was identical. In the monocentric study, the subjective experience of stress was significantly reduced in the intervention group after 2.5 months compared to the control group, which did not have access to the programme. In the multicentre study, no effects were discernible in the group comparison. Presumably no differences could be detected, as the number of users was significantly lower in the second study. However, confirmatory analyses of this assumption are still pending.

Research objective and method
The aim of this project was therefore to merge the data sets in order to repeat and partly specify the analyses with a larger sample. The following questions, among others, are to be answered:
- To what extent does the use of 7Mind measures improve health and work-related outcomes?
- At what "dose" does the use of the measures improve health and work-related outcomes?
- Which group(s) of people were reached or not reached by the measures?
Results
The larger sample size will make it possible to determine more precise estimates of effectiveness. Furthermore, the results will help to make future health promotion measures more specific and target group-orientated.
The publication of the study will follow.
