Learning materia medica with POL

Project overview

The origins of problem-based learning (POL) go back to the 19th century. The development of POL that is relevant today took place in the 1960s, for example in the training of engineers. POL has now become established in many areas of medical teaching worldwide and is currently practised at 13 medical faculties in Germany that offer model study programmes. POL is particularly suitable for homeopathy due to the individualised finding of a remedy for a person, as finding a suitable remedy seems to be intrinsically problem-based.

Goals and methods

The aim of the project is to adapt the POL for the area of materia medica learning and thus make the didactic method of problem-orientated learning accessible for homeopathy training. To this end, homeopathic case histories will be worked on over three weekends using POL in the Natura Academy's homeopathy training course. For evaluation purposes, two questionnaires on the quality of teaching and the well-being of the participants will be used after the POL sessions, i.e. at three measurement points.

Results and discussion

Empirical data on the course analysis will be shown and the possibilities and limitations of POL in homeopathy training will be explored. The analysis will be flanked by a qualitative analysis of free text responses.

Against the background of increasingly innovative learning concepts in medicine, educational research is an important pillar of integrative and personalised medicine. Corresponding formats should therefore be consistently evaluated and established in homeopathic education and training.
