The health literacy of people with a migration background in Hesse (GeKoMi)
A mixed-methods study from the perspective of different actors
Project overview
Study results from Germany and other countries indicate that people with a migrant background have a lower average level of health literacy compared to the general population. Little is known about the exact causes, the barriers to accessing health-related information and the strategies and approaches for increasing the health literacy of people with a migrant background.
The aim of the GeKoMi project was therefore to use a mixed-methods approach to determine the barriers that people with a migrant background face when accessing health-related information, particularly in connection with health promotion and prevention services, and to identify potential for strengthening their health literacy. Based on these results, target group-specific measures and strategies for strengthening the health literacy of people with a migrant background will be derived.
