Overview

  • There is a particularly high risk of plaque-induced gingivitis at the plaque retention sites caused by brackets, archwires, ligatures, bands and other orthodontic elements in orthodontically treated patients. In the clinical study, the effectiveness of a new type of oral irrigator (Philips Sonicare Power Flosser) was compared with a conventional oral hygiene procedure (I-Prox P sulcus brush from miradent) in terms of plaque removal and improvement of gingivitis in 72 patients with multi-bracket appliances.
  • Toothpastes with fluoride make an essential contribution to oral hygiene at home by protecting the teeth from caries through fluoride and improving the removal of biofilm from the tooth surface. Various additives can improve the effectiveness of toothpastes. Echinacea is a medicinal plant known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and a randomised clinically controlled trial is investigating the efficacy of a novel toothpaste containing echinacea in terms of its biofilm and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Molar incisor hypomineralisation is a developmental disease of the hard substance of permanent teeth. It was first scientifically described and named in 2001 and affected 28.7% of twelve-year-olds in Germany in the last population-representative survey in 2014. 5.4% of the age group were severely affected and had defects in the tooth structure that required treatment up to and including extraction The cause of the disease is largely unclear. One possible reason for the high prevalence found in 2014 could be a chickenpox vaccine used between 2004 and 2006. The connection is being investigated in a case-control study.
