Elite coalitions and civil wars

Project overview

Why do political elites from different ethnic groups form governing coalitions? And under what circumstances do these multi-ethnic coalitions prevent political violence? These questions are central to the stability of ethnically diverse associates. Using global data and case studies, we investigate the factors that favour or prevent elite coalitions in multi-ethnic societies. Common identity markers and formal institutions play an important role.
