Chair of General Practice I and Interprofessional Care
GPs focus on people and their biological, psychological and social aspects. They treat people of all age groups for a wide variety of illnesses and consultation reasons, often in a family context and over long periods of time. General practice uses special diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms for this.
Part of the Institute of General Practice and Primary Care (iamag)
We are part of the Institute of General Practice and Primary Care (iamag) and form a joint team with the Chair of General Practice II and Patient Orientation in Primary Care. Our aim is to convey our enthusiasm for the profession of general practitioner to the students and to awaken their understanding of the GP/outpatient level of work. In doing so, we support them in becoming good doctors.
Practice-orientated research and interprofessional teamwork
Our laboratory is the practice. Our research answers questions from practice in practice. Our research is interprofessional teamwork, carried out jointly by non-physician and GP scientists and doctoral students. Our constant goal is to improve the care of our patients.
Research
Interprofessional team in the field of basic and health care research
The interprofessional team of the chair plans and realises projects in the field of basic and health care research related to family medicine and outpatient health care. Our research is closely linked to teaching. In daily practice and in discussions with teaching physicians and students, interesting, practice-relevant research questions arise, which we give space to. We use both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
Diverse research methods and experience
We have particular experience in conducting surveys, focus groups and interview studies as well as multicentre cluster-randomised intervention studies in the setting of outpatient medicine. This variety of methods enables us to gain in-depth and practice-relevant insights.
Cooperation in the Interdisciplinary Centre for Health Services Research - IZVF
Our institute is a member of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Health Services Research - IZVF at Witten/Herdecke University. Trustful cooperation with other working groups at Witten/Herdecke University and other national and international research centres is of particular importance to us. These co-operations promote the exchange of knowledge and improve health care research in the health care system.

Teaching
Comprehensive courses are offered in the field of general practice and outpatient healthcare. Particular emphasis is placed on interprofessional training and patient-orientation in order to provide students with practical and future-oriented skills. This practice-orientated training optimally prepares students for their future role in the health care system.
