Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat.

Professor
Faculty of Health (School of Medicine) | Professorship of Clinical Molecular Genetics and Epigenetics
Professorship of Clinical Molecular Genetics and Epigenetics
We focus on topics and research questions in the fields of genetics and epigenetics. Our methodological portfolio includes modern molecular biological analysis methods, including high-throughput sequencing technologies. Our team also organises interdisciplinary research work in the experimental laboratories of the Centre for Research in Clinical Medicine (ZFKM) at the Helios University Hospital Wuppertal (HUKW).
Research
We are interested in the dynamic regulation of the epigenome in cell differentiation processes that can contribute to the development of complex diseases. In particular, we investigate the biological relevance and mechanisms of histone variant incorporation into chromatin and the role of small non-coding RNAs in controlling these processes. Our research also focuses on how parental epigenetic information might be passed on to the next generation. Our experimental models include human and mammalian cells as well as unicellular protozoa (ciliates). We also conduct various translational research projects on clinical problems, for example the identification of epigenome biomarkers in the context of complex diseases with close links to paediatrics and neonatology. In addition, there is close cooperation with the Chair of Neurobiology and Genetics of Behaviour (Prof. Dr Martina Piefke) on various neuropsychological research topics in which genetic and epigenetic biomarkers are investigated.

Teaching
Since the winter semester 2019/2020, Prof Postberg has been responsible for the lectures and examinations in human genetics in semester 8. The other courses on offer include topics from the field of cell biology, in particular the biology of cell nucleus processes. Other topics include scientific methodology and contributions to the lecture series on molecular medicine. The course is primarily aimed at students on the model degree programme in medicine and psychology (Master's degree programme). Prof. Postberg also regularly lectures on current research topics in the clinical block training of the Centre for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Helium University Hospital Wuppertal (HUKW). Under the umbrella of the Centre for Research in Clinical Medicine (ZFKM), we also organise seminars and colloquia for students, doctoral students and academic staff at the Wuppertal campus.
