Caspar David Friedrich: Why his paintings still fascinate us today

Misty coastal landscape with wooded cliffs, sandy beach and gentle waves beneath dense, hazy coniferous forest.

As Caspar David Friedrich remarked, the greatest merit of art is to evoke intellectual stimulation in the viewer and to awaken thoughts, feelings and sensations. But how do we as a society experience his art today in the digital age? Can his paintings and their messages still inspire us? Dr David Hornemann v. Laer will address these and many other questions in his lecture at the Witten Citizens' University. As a member of the WittenLab. Zukunftslabor Studium fundamentale at Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H), his research specialisation is in art studies, aesthetics and art education. Together with the participants, he would like to look at selected works by Friedrich from a new perspective on this evening.

2024 was all about the famous painter. To mark the 250th anniversary of his birth, the Bürgeruni lecture is part of an international line-up of exhibitions, events and digital offerings that honour the artist's memory.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, 10 April, from 8 pm at Haus Witten, Ruhrstraße 86. Admission costs 7 euros at the box office (5 euros reduced). The Citizens' University is a joint event organised by the vhs Witten | Wetter | Herdecke and the WittenLab. Zukunftslabor Studium fundamentale of the UW/H.
