Care decisions in nursing homes

Using the example of the use of medical devices for chronic wounds (ViP)

Project overview

This study analysed care decisions in inpatient nursing homes using the example of the use of medical devices for chronic wounds. In Germany, there have been hardly any studies to date on the basis of which decisions about wound care products are made in nursing homes.

According to statements from the field, treating physicians - usually the general practitioner of the respective nursing home resident - or the hospital discharging the resident to the nursing home issue an individual prescription for the required aids. Care facilities then order these via a pharmacy or a homecare company.

The aim of this study was to gain an insight into decision-making processes. It analysed how the process of wound care is organised in nursing homes.
