A snake in an X-ray machine and a dinosaur that can no longer bite properly
More than 200 children from Witten have brought their sick cuddly toys to Witten/Herdecke University.
It smells different, it looks different, there are unfamiliar things everywhere: a visit to the doctor can be overwhelming and frightening for children. Students at Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H) want to reduce this fear in a playful way and have therefore opened the doors of the Teddy Hospital again today (20 June 2024).
Insights into the Teddy Hospital
The children were able to independently familiarise themselves with the processes in a hospital; from registration to the operating theatre, they went through all the wards, asked questions, described the complaints of the "patients" and assisted with treatment.
They were also able to have the dental health of their protégés examined. With the help of a horse, dentistry students explained how to brush teeth properly. Psychology students also used various teddies to show the children how to name and express emotions.
Positive experiences for children and students
"It's always impressive to see how detailed the children can describe the illness of their cuddly toy," says medical student Zoe Drücker, one of the organisers of the campaign. She is also delighted that so many students volunteer to help out every year: "It's a very valuable experience for us. We can practise dealing with small children and gain experience for our future working lives."
There will be another date for the Teddy Hospital this year. The daycare centres in Witten will be informed as soon as this date has been set.
