In a constantly changing business world, companies are faced with the major challenge of successfully implementing relevant transformations. But why do so many companies fail to achieve their goals? The new book "From Good Intentions to Measurable Success", written by Prof Dr Erik Strauß from the University of Witten/Herdecke (UW/H), among others, provides answers and practical solutions for managers in SMEs.

Why do transformations fail?

The authors show that only around 28 percent of SMEs manage to fully adapt to new market conditions such as digitalisation or sustainability. The others do not succeed in fully realising their transformation goals.

Based on many years of experience and more than 800 projects, business experts Prof Dr Erik Strauß, Marc-René Faerber, Dr Hans-Joachim Grabow and Benjamin Niethammer identify the key stumbling blocks in their book and present proven methods for overcoming them.

Three keys to success: people, structures, performance

  1. Involving people: "A successful transformation starts with people," emphasises Prof. Dr Erik Strauß. It is essential to involve everyone involved at an early stage and to establish clear goals, rules and communication channels. This is the only way to create the necessary acceptance and momentum for change.
  2. Establish clear structures: Structures are the foundation for achieving a goal. "Motivated employees need clear structures in order to be able to work effectively," explains Prof Strauß. These structures make it possible to coordinate projects and measures effectively and utilise synergies.
  3. Make performance measurable: A continuous focus on measurable success is the third key to success. "Define milestones, flagship projects and key figures to make progress visible and controllable," advises Erik Strauß. Transparency and measurable goals significantly increase the chances of success

Practical help for managers

The book is primarily aimed at shareholders, board members and managers in SMEs who are faced with the challenge of leading their companies through transformative processes. In addition to theoretical principles, the book offers concrete recommendations for action and practical tools that can be used immediately in day-to-day business.

"Successful transformations begin with a clear yes to change. With this book, we want to empower managers to strengthen the implementation skills in their companies and achieve sustainable success," says Prof Strauß.
